Rationale

The overall concept and theme of our project was to look at the harm of C02 Emissions and to talk about them in reference to the current effects, leading on to future effects. Focusing on young and/or new drivers as a target audience, we are trying to make them more conscious of how much they drive and how often they use cars despite it not always being necessary. The overall design of both the website and video shows the contrast of both the future and the present time. This is shown through the video clearly, and the website with the involvement of images and text from newspapers etc, to contrast back. The colour palette chosen also i think adds that futuristic vibe and intensity that we were going for. The research that we put into this helped us immensely as it gave us a solid direction forward. We looked at movies and simple images that we liked, then tying these back into our topic. The animatic shows the possible effects of these car emissions, where at the start that change of date from 2018 to 2045 is shown, followed by the characters who are applied with SPF +1000. This and he other little details presented are some of the things we decided early on in our process, to over-eventuate what the future would look like to show the harm that future generations are being born into. We backed the website and animatic with strong facts that were researched into at the start of the topic to help us gauge an understanding and put us into a direction to share what we found.

Website Decisions

Throughout the website creation, I made a lot of changes to it. I kept to the wireframe and made little design decisions here and there to make sure the final outcome looked like I wanted it to. Wether this be the change in fonts, wether or not I wanted the text to be in columns, the images used, where the video was placed etc. Each decision affected the outcome. Firstly regards to the font choice, I wanted to use an older script font that contrasted what the video was talking about and the whole futuristic theme of the rest of the website. I felt as if a lot of the other Google Fonts were quite bland but this added a bit of character and life into the website. The text was hard to decide on. I liked the idea of columns under each picture, but it kind of broke up the website in a way that to me wasn’t appealing. Maybe in the future I could of had no text on the home page and just had clickable images which lead to something else. The images were the one thing I wanted to get right. When doing research and seeing other students website’s, I noticed a trend of computer generated graphics and images that to me all looked rather similar. Not to say that this is a bad thing, but it doesn’t really bring in an extra element or that thing that draws your attention. So I decided to work with a different medium. Again I tried to contrast that futuristic idea, with the old ragged newspaper look. This I thought made the website interesting and did add that idea of drawing your eye in. I placed the video at the top of the page as I wanted it to set the tone of the rest of the website and initiate the ideas going forward.  Ben – Designfordisplay

Fonts

Ovo was inspired by a set of hand lettered caps seen in a 1930’s lettering guide. The capitals suggested the time in which they were made because of the soft serif treatment used. This detail and a subtle casual feeling creeping into the otherwise classical forms led to the soft genial lowercase and the whimsical numbers now seen in Ovo. Ovo is a medium contrast serif font. Because of the old style variable letter widths and subtle detail it will work best at medium to large sizes.

Further Ideas

Continuing on from the colour palette, I re-coloured the title which I like as it is a little bit more cohesive and connected rather than a lot of slightly different colours which would be hard to bring back into the actual content of the website. I also ran with the idea of using statues as heads for our animatic and quickly traced over three different ones in photoshop, again using the colour palette colours. I then also took the idea of using worn out leather to act as their skin to show the future effects of increased heat etc. I didn’t want to just use one straight colour in photoshop either as it would be quite boring a maybe look a little simple. This also ties into the collage idea we are thinking about.

Colour Palette

Coming up with a colour palette is important to the cohesiveness of our project. One of our focuses is to connect the website to the animatic and vice versa. To do this we need to have similar details and images etc, to make sure we can pull it off. The colour palette also acts as a big focus point in terms of emotive quality. For example, if I was to open a website which was filled with a rainbow coloured background and bright bold text, it would give off a completely different emotion and feel than if it was all black and dungy. This effect I feel is more important the animatic as a good colour palette can help convey your argument and actual storyline/idea and make it that much more understandable. Below I have taken pictures of our inspiration and narrowed them down to select various different colours amongst them. Through this I think we have established a good cohesive range of colours which can now be incorporated into our website and animatic.

Website Developments

Moving on from the last initial ideas, we had thought about a certain style to attempt. After doing website exercises, I understood the complexity of HTML and CSS and so I simplified this design to start of with to give me a direction moving forward. I took on the “collage” idea and came up with lots of ideas. I started to think of physical collaging and remembering my days in school where we used to cut things out of magazines, books and newspapers. I decided to try the idea of using different letters in a newspaper to form the words “CO2 Vehicle Emissions” and I am happy with how it turned out. The idea of the newspaper and the vibe gives of is very “now” and when relating it back to our storyline in the animatic of now vs in the future, I think it relates back nicely and it could work well as a starting point.

Story Board Ideas

Below I have thought about the idea of the car they drive and the effects of it in 2050. It could be a newish car where it contains all of those bright colours mentioned in the mood boards post. Or it could be a new car of 2018 but now be rusty and old, with a lot of fumes coming out the exhaust pipe.
